Kamala Markandaya

Kamala Markandaya was a pseudonym used by Kamala Purnaiya Taylor, an Indian novelist and journalist. Born on January 01, 1924, in Mysore, India, she moved to England in 1948, where she continued her writing career. Her first novel, 'Nectar in a Sieve' (1954), was a bestseller and an American Library Association Notable Book. Her work often explores cultural tensions and conflicts between East and West, and she is known for her eloquent and evocative portrayal of Indian life and the complexities of post-colonialism. Markandaya's writing is characterized by its empathetic exploration of the lives of her characters, particularly women. She passed away on May 16, 2004.
