  1. 1. The Bloater

Min is married but like a reckless little schoolgirl still unbroken. She is wooed by the Bloater, a huge luxurious baritone who moves across Europe from one concert platform to another. He irritates and attracts her, so she mocks him and seeks friends for help, but the danger comes when she confides in Billy, an old crony and musicologist who is the male equivalent of Min, clever, quick and gay, and thus a man she cannot mock or defeat.
