Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam was a prominent Indian writer and poet, considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century Punjabi literature. Born on August 31, 1919, in Gujranwala, British India (now in Pakistan), she wrote in Punjabi and Hindi. Pritam is best known for her poignant poem 'Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu' mourning the partition of India, and her novel 'Pinjar' which addresses the plight of women during the partition. She was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Jnanpith Award and the Padma Vibhushan, for her contribution to Indian literature. Amrita Pritam passed away on October 31, 2005.
