George Rippey Stewart

George Rippey Stewart (1895–1980) was an American historian, toponymist, novelist, and a professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his works of fiction, including the post-apocalyptic novel 'Earth Abides' (1949), and his non-fiction, especially 'Names on the Land: A Historical Account of Place-Naming in the United States' (1945). His writings demonstrate a deep appreciation for the environment and a profound understanding of American culture and history.
