Margarita Engle

Margarita Engle is a Cuban-American poet, novelist, and journalist who writes many of her books in verse. She is known for her works that often reflect her Cuban heritage and her deep appreciation for nature. Engle was the first Latina to receive a Newbery Honor for her book 'The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom.' She has received multiple awards for her work, including the Pura Belpré Award and the Américas Award for her contributions to children's and young adult literature.
