The Well by Elizabeth Jolley
On a remote Australian farm, an aging woman forms a possessive bond with the younger companion she has taken under her wing. After a nighttime drive ends with something—or someone—struck on the road, they drop what they believe is a body into a disused well, and their lives begin to unravel under secrecy, guilt, and the threat of blackmail. As eerie sounds and elusive figures feed fear and desire, their fragile alliance curdles into manipulation and paranoia. The narrative probes obsession, class, and the perilous boundary between imagination and reality.
