L’amazone Et La Cuisinière by Alain Testart

Anthropologie de la division sexuelle du travail

An anthropological exploration of the near-universal sexual division of labor, it investigates why most societies reserve hunting, warfare, and the handling of weapons for men while associating women with cooking and domestic tasks. Drawing on broad ethnographic comparisons, it challenges biological determinism, emphasizes symbolic prohibitions and social institutions that regulate access to tools and prey, analyzes rare exceptions, and shows how these rules organize everyday life and sustain gendered hierarchies and power relations.
