La Rébellion Française by Jean Nicolas
Mouvements populaires et conscience sociale (1661-1789)
Drawing on an extensive inventory of collective actions from 1661 to 1789, this study maps the rhythms, geography, and repertoires of popular protest under the Ancien Régime. It distinguishes subsistence riots, anti-tax uprisings, seigneurial conflicts, conscription and religious disturbances, showing how they were shaped by moral economy norms, local solidarities, and ritualized confrontation. Based on judicial and administrative records, it reveals a persistent culture of negotiation and resistance that linked communities and authorities while sharpening social and political consciousness. The long arc of unrest it documents emerges as a crucial prelude to revolutionary politicization.
