The Myth Of Monogamy by Raisa Barash

Fidelity and Infidelity in Animals and People

Drawing on evidence from animal behavior and human psychology, this work argues that strict lifelong exclusivity is biologically uncommon, revealing how evolution shapes tendencies toward extra-pair mating, sperm competition, and mate guarding across species. It explains how these forces influence desire, jealousy, and commitment in people, showing that pair-bonding coexists with competing reproductive incentives. Rather than moralizing, it offers a scientific lens on why fidelity can be challenging, suggesting that sustained monogamy is a cultural and personal choice maintained by effort rather than a biological default.
