The Descent Of Alette by Alice Notley
An experimental long poem that follows a woman’s descent into an underground, subway-like world where she confronts oppressive, authoritarian forces and a chorus of voices that try to silence her. Through a mythic journey and acts of resistance she struggles to reclaim her voice and narrative authority, turning language and quotation into tools of revolt. Blending urban imagery, mythic descent, repetition and typographic play, the work explores themes of identity, motherhood, collective uprising and the transformative power of speech.
