The Utopian Function Of Art And Literature by Ernst Bloch
This work argues that art and literature possess a distinct utopian function: they reveal and preserve human longings, images and 'not-yet' possibilities that point beyond existing social conditions, thereby nurturing anticipatory consciousness and hope. By excavating suppressed desires and alternative modes of life, creative works can critique the present, prefigure emancipatory futures, and serve as a resource for social and political transformation rather than merely reflecting reality.
