A Country Doctor by Franz Kafka
A rural physician is urgently summoned on a stormy night to treat a seriously ill boy, but his journey and attempts to help become nightmarishly surreal: his horse vanishes, strange helpers appear and betray him, and he is compelled to perform a brutal, improvised operation without proper tools or consent. He returns to his village shunned and bewildered, left to confront the collapse of his authority, the absurdity of expectations placed on him, and a persistent sense of guilt and impotence. The story blends realism and dreamlike episodes to explore duty, alienation, and personal crisis.
