A Theory of Disability
This work argues that disability should be understood primarily as a form of social minority status rather than simply a medical misfortune, developing a “mere-difference” account that treats many disabilities as differences that do not necessarily make lives worse. It critiques common assumptions that disability is inherently harmful, distinguishes between harms that arise from bodily limitations and those produced by social arrangements, and examines moral and political implications for justice, rights, and public policy. The book combines philosophical argument with attention to practical concerns about inclusion, discrimination, and the design of social institutions to better accommodate diverse bodies.
