Minna Von Barnhelm by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
oder das SoldatenglĂĽck
Set in the aftermath of the Seven Years’ War, the play follows a proud Prussian officer, Major Tellheim, who has been wounded, accused of dishonor, and denied his pay; his former beloved, a resourceful young woman, tracks him down and, together with servants and soldiers, engineers a series of tests, disguises and comical misunderstandings that probe questions of honor, duty, money and social rank. Through witty dialogue and satirical situations the characters expose bureaucratic absurdities and bourgeois pretensions, leading to revelations that restore reputation, reconcile lovers, and celebrate sincerity, mutual respect and practical virtue.
