A resourceful Librarian and her apprentice are dispatched to a fragile, alternate city to recover a valuable and dangerous book, but the mission quickly becomes entangled in local politics, masked intrigue, and escalating violence between rival factions. As hidden identities and shifting alliances emerge, she must use cunning, diplomacy, and force to uphold the Library’s rules while protecting people she grows attached to, forcing her to confront moral compromises and the personal costs of her work.
