The Man Who Came Early by Poul Anderson
A young American serviceman is accidentally transported to Viking-age Iceland and, despite his modern technical knowledge and expectations of being able to improve life there, finds that social structures, material limits, and required practical skills make his expertise useless; unable to adapt or to convincingly transfer technology, he becomes alienated and ultimately meets a tragic fate, the tale serving as a critique of romanticizing the past and of assuming modernity guarantees superiority.
