The History Of The Maghrib by Abdallah Laroui
An Interpretive Essay
A sweeping reinterpretation of Maghrib history that rejects colonial and romanticized narratives and situates the region’s development in its own socio-economic, political and cultural dynamics. It traces transformations from tribal and pre-Islamic formations through Arab-Islamic expansion, the rise of medieval dynasties and urban centers, and the disruptive penetration of European powers, emphasizing modes of production, class relations and the tensions between tribal, urban and religious authorities. The study critiques earlier historiography, examines processes of Arabization and Islamization alongside Berber continuities, and shows how colonial restructuring of institutions and identities produced the conditions for modern nationalist movements and ongoing debates over modernity and development.
