How Elite Colleges Are Failing Disadvantaged Students
An ethnographic study of low-income students at selective colleges that shows socioeconomic diversity is more complex than admissions numbers suggest: some students arrive with prior exposure to elite-preparatory schools, networks, and cultural know-how that help them navigate campus life, while others come from under-resourced schools and neighborhoods and therefore face greater barriers to belonging and academic success. The book argues that financial aid alone cannot close these gaps because institutional practices, time demands, social norms, and racial dynamics shape who can access internships, faculty mentorship, and social capital. Drawing on interviews and fieldwork, it reveals how colleges can inadvertently reproduce inequality even as they recruit low-income students and offers practical recommendations for better supporting students from different low-income backgrounds.
