Le Metropoli E La Vita Dello Spirito by Georg Simmel

The essay analyzes how life in large cities transforms individual psychology and social relations: the constant sensory stimulation, impersonality of economic exchange and dense social interactions produce a protective, blasé attitude and intellectualized modes of experience that enable people to cope but also foster reserve, fragmentation and anonymity; at the same time the metropolis cultivates new forms of individuality, specialized social roles and associative life, producing both greater freedom and deeper social isolation.
