Lisístrata by Aristophanes
A clever Athenian woman persuades women across the city-states to withhold sex from their husbands and lovers and to seize the treasury in order to force the men to negotiate an end to the war; the play mixes bawdy farce and sharp political satire as gender roles are inverted, both sexes resort to increasingly ridiculous stratagems, and the absurdity and human cost of prolonged conflict are laid bare.
