Io Sono Leggenda by Richard Matheson
A solitary survivor barricades himself in a ruined Los Angeles after a pandemic has turned most of humanity into nocturnal, vampire-like creatures; by day he hunts the infected, by night he defends his home while obsessively studying them in hopes of finding a cure. Isolated and tormented by loss, he conducts grim experiments, questions what it means to be human, and ultimately discovers that the society he thought was monstrous has its own norms—forcing him to confront the possibility that he, not they, has become the legend of a new world.
