Il Monaco by Matthew Gregory Lewis
A Romance
A celebrated and seemingly pious monk in Madrid becomes ensnared by desire and ambition after encountering a mysterious woman whose charms and occult aid lead him into a spiraling series of lies, crimes, and blasphemies; as he seeks to conceal his sins he commits ever-greater atrocities, encounters supernatural bargains and horror, and drags other innocent figures into ruin. The narrative combines lurid Gothic spectacle with biting critique of religious hypocrisy, exploring how repressed desire, power, and superstition can corrupt virtue and destroy lives.
