In 1933 young doctor Josef Zeippchmann begins a placement in a provincial German hospital. He hopes his experimental tuberculosis research will bring a cure, but his risky methods meet skepticism and he is not accepted by the community. Although his treatment succeeds with Minna Wersen, whom he treats at his own expense, rising nationalist and anti-Semitic tensions lead to accusations of corruption and revolutionary violence and to his arrest. Only Minna believes in his innocence and fights to rescue him despite obstacles.
