1923 by Ned Boulting

In 2020 cycling commentator Ned Boulting bought a length of Pathé news film and set out to learn all he could about it. Once restored it proved to be a 2.5 minute sequence from stage 4 of the 1923 Tour de France, showing a lone rider crossing a bridge, and Boulting studies each frame. His investigation becomes a travelogue, history and detective story about cycling and France five years after World War I and about figures such as Henri Pélissier and Theophile Beeckman.
