American Mermaid by Julia Langbein

Penelope Schleeman is a broke Connecticut high school teacher whose novel American Mermaid, about a wheelchair-bound scientist named Sylvia, draws sudden attention and lures her to Los Angeles to co-write a studio screenplay with two male hacks. Under pressure to recast Sylvia as a teen sex object, Penelope encounters threats in the draft and siren calls that lure people into danger, forcing her to decide whether Sylvia has come to life as she fights to protect the character while both search for truth and self-acceptance.
