20th Century Boys 1 by Naoki Urasawa

A former teen rock wannabe turned convenience-store owner must reckon with a nightmare from his past when a mysterious cult begins repeating a symbol and anthem he and his childhood friends invented as a game; the book alternates between their innocent summers in 1969 and a tense, unraveling present in the late 1990s as bizarre attacks and disappearances mirror the children’s made-up “prophecies,” forcing the adults to reunite, question which memories were fantasies and which were warnings, and try to uncover who is using their childhood myth to manipulate a nation.
