Eros and Sexuality in the History of Western Esotericism

A scholarly survey of how eros, sexual symbolism and sexual practices have shaped Western esoteric currents from antiquity to modern occultism, tracing motifs such as the sacred marriage, androgyny, alchemical coniunctio and ritualized sexual techniques across hermetic, alchemical, mystical and occult texts; it combines close textual and iconographic readings with historiographical reflection to show how sexuality functioned both as metaphor and as embodied practice, how secrecy and scandal have affected transmission and reception, and how erotic themes helped to structure ideas of spiritual transformation, gender and identity within esoteric movements.
