Meren Katedraali by Ildefonso Falcones
Set in 14th-century Barcelona, the novel follows Arnau Estanyol, a boy born into servitude who survives hardship to become a respected stoneworker, sailor and merchant while the city's common people unite to raise the great church of Santa Maria del Mar. Framed by political conflict, maritime trade and the devastation of plague, his life is shaped by loyalty, forbidden love, betrayal, courtroom struggles and the harsh justice of feudal and ecclesiastical powers. Through his personal rise and suffering the story explores themes of freedom, solidarity, faith and the high cost of social mobility.
