Sweet Ermengarde by H. P. Lovecraft

A brief, tongue-in-cheek pastiche that lampoons overwrought sentimental melodramas by piling on stock characters and absurd situations: a persecuted ingénue, a melodramatic villain, and a preposterously gallant rescuer whose antics resolve every contrivance. Written in deliberately inflated, stagey diction, it mocks the clichés of romantic fiction with exaggerated dialogue and comic stage directions, ending in a neatly contrived, ironically cheerful dénouement.
