The Picture In The House by H. P. Lovecraft

A lone traveler seeking shelter in the remote hills stumbles upon a decaying, antiquated farmhouse inhabited by a strange, talkative old man whose archaic speech and morbid enthusiasms hint at long-buried barbarism; drawn into the dim parlor he is shown a grisly, centuries-old engraving that awakens a dawning horror about the occupant’s tastes and lineage, and as night closes in the narrator must confront the revulsion of inherited savagery and make a desperate escape from the house’s claustrophobic, antiquarian menace.
