A merchant's youngest daughter asks only for a delicate scarlet blossom, and when her father steals the flower from an enchanted garden he is forced to give her to the fearsome owner as reparation; she goes to live in the creature's splendid palace, learns kindness and understanding for the being beneath the frightful exterior, and after a visit home delayed by jealous sisters returns in time to save him — her love and tears break the spell and restore him to his true, human form so they can be together.
