Die Hölle Ist Die Abwesenheit Gottes by Ted Chiang

In a world where angels, miracles and the destinations of souls are plain to see, a man's life is upended when a divine visitation kills someone he loves; consumed by grief he seeks certainty about salvation and tries to learn how to be granted admission to the visible afterlife. The tale uses that premise to examine faith, theodicy and moral motivation—whether devotion can be earned by rule-following or only given freely—and forces characters and readers to confront what it means to love God, to seek reward, and to accept the apparent arbitrariness of divine justice.
