They Went On Together by Robert Nathan

As war approaches, a widowed mother and her two young children join hundreds of refugees fleeing the countryside, carrying what they can. Eleven-year-old Paul travels with his weary mother and four-year-old sister Marie Rose, and they take in Sylvie, a girl Paul's age who has no family. When enemy planes bomb the region, Paul and Sylvie are separated and romantic feelings develop between them while their mother searches for them, overcoming fear and hardship, and the family reunites to continue their perilous journey to safety.
