The Rocking Horse Winner by D. H. Lawrence
A boy in a comfortable but emotionally impoverished household becomes determined to cure his family’s chronic need for money and approval; convinced he can sense luck, he rides his rocking horse into a trance to name winning racehorses, secretly placing bets and accumulating winnings to satisfy his mother’s appetite for status, but his compulsion intensifies until a final, frenzied ride to foresee the outcome of a great race leaves him exhausted and fatally ill, and though his winnings answer the household’s demand for cash, they cannot heal the underlying emptiness.
