A Kansas girl is carried by a cyclone to a marvelous, otherworldly land where she seeks a way home; along the way she journeys to an emerald capital to ask a great wizard for help, befriends a straw-stuffed Scarecrow, a rusted Tin Woodman, and a frightened Lion—each hoping to gain what they lack—and together they face witches, strange wonders, and the discovery that the wizard is not what he seems, ultimately relying on kindness, cleverness, and a pair of enchanted slippers to reach home.
