A humble village boy swallows a small star baked into a special festival cake and grows up known simply as Smith, a craftsman whose life is quietly altered by the secret that the star grants him occasional access to the dazzling, strange land of Faerie. Through encounters with its luminous inhabitants he receives glimpses of beauty and otherworldly art that shape his work, friendships and sense of wonder, yet he remains bound to ordinary human life and its limits; in time he must accept the bittersweet responsibility of passing the enchantment on so that another child may be touched by Faerie while he lets go of what he has loved.
