An aging parish priest, left alone in his empty church after the Civil War, recollects his part in the arrest and execution of a young peasant he once vowed to protect; through his memories and the villagers’ testimonies the peasant’s simple life, courage, and acts of solidarity are reconstructed. The novella traces how fear, hypocrisy, and institutional cowardice—especially within the Church and local elites—enabled repression, while the priest’s mounting guilt forces a painful examination of personal and collective responsibility. The story works as a compact, elegiac meditation on memory, moral failure, and the human cost of political violence.
