Le Capitaine Fracasse by Théophile Gautier
Set in 17th-century France, the story follows a destitute nobleman, the Baron de Sigognac, who joins a troupe of traveling actors to escape his crumbling ancestral home. Adopting the stage name "Captain Fracasse," he embarks on a series of adventures filled with romance, duels, and intrigue. As he travels with the troupe, he falls in love with the beautiful actress Isabelle and faces numerous challenges, including rival suitors and dangerous adversaries. Throughout his journey, the baron discovers courage, friendship, and a renewed sense of purpose, ultimately transforming his life and reclaiming his noble heritage.
