Modern Girls by Jennifer Brown
Set in 1935 New York City, the story follows the lives of Dottie Krasinsky and her mother, Rose, as they navigate the challenges of unexpected pregnancies and the societal expectations placed upon women. Dottie, a young Jewish woman with aspirations of a career and independence, finds herself grappling with the consequences of a one-night stand, while Rose, a traditional homemaker, faces her own surprise pregnancy that threatens to upend her family's stability. As both women confront their personal dilemmas, they must reconcile their desires with the cultural norms of their time, ultimately discovering the strength and resilience within themselves and each other.
