Confrontations by Simone Atangana Bekono, Suzanne Heukensfeldt Jansen
Salomé Atabong, a sixteen-year-old with a Cameroonian father and Dutch mother, finds herself in a juvenile detention center in the Netherlands. Sentenced for a violent crime she doesn't regret, Salomé is expected to engage with a psychologist and express remorse, but she resists. Her home life offers little solace, with her father battling liver cancer and her sister eager to leave their village. As Salomé navigates the prison system, she confronts her emotions and the deeper reasons behind her actions. The story explores the societal pressures on Black women and the systemic challenges they face.
