  1. 1. The Later Roman Empire

    AD 354–378

A vivid eyewitness chronicle of the fourth-century empire, it traces the reigns of Constantius II, Julian, Jovian, Valentinian, and Valens through sharp portraits of court intrigue, administrative life, and relentless wars against Persians, Goths, Alemanni, and Huns, culminating in the disaster at Adrianople. Blending precise military reporting with moral commentary and ethnographic digressions, it captures an imperial world struggling with religious change, social tensions, and the strains of defending vast frontiers.
