The Road From Colonus by E. M. Forster
An aging English traveler in Greece is captivated by a village spring and ancient plane tree, sensing a rare chance at renewal and autonomy. Long managed by solicitous companions, he pleads to stay at a humble inn but is coaxed away for his “own good.” When a later report reveals a catastrophe at the spot he wished to remain, he is spared physically but left spiritually diminished, haunted by the realization that he relinquished the one moment that might have restored his life.
