The Empire Builders; by Boris Vian

or The Schmurz

An anxious bourgeois family flees a mysterious, wounded presence whose moans haunt their home, retreating floor by floor in a futile bid for safety. As they ascend, they shed possessions, empathy, and coherent language, growing more callous and estranged from one another. The inescapable intruder becomes a mirror of their fear, guilt, and violence, exposing the absurdity of denial and the emptiness of their upward striving.
