Militia Christi by Adolf von Harnack
Die christliche Religion und der Soldatenstand in den ersten drei Jahrhunderten
This study examines early Christian attitudes toward military service and warfare during the first three centuries, drawing on patristic sources and historical evidence. It argues that a largely negative stance prevailed, rooted in objections to idolatrous rituals, oath-taking, and the shedding of blood, even as some soldiers converted and local practices varied. The analysis highlights the persistent tension between civic loyalty and discipleship, and the gradual developments that prepared the way for later accommodation to imperial military structures.
