An ordinary high-school English teacher is recruited to travel through a portal in a diner to the late 1950s and given a single mission: prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Living undercover for years in the past, he builds a life, falls in love with a school librarian, and discovers that the past fiercely resists being changed—small acts have unpredictable, often violent consequences. When his intervention produces unintended, catastrophic effects on the future, he must decide whether to preserve the world he made or undo his own actions, confronting questions of fate, responsibility, and the personal cost of trying to rewrite history.
