Esotericism And The Academy by Wouter J. Hanegraaff

Rejected Knowledge in Western Culture

This work examines the historical marginalization of esoteric traditions within Western scholarship, arguing that prejudices stemming from Enlightenment, religious, and scientific norms have led academia to dismiss or misunderstand occult, mystical, and hermetic currents; it offers a clear conceptual framework and methodological program for treating esotericism as a legitimate field of study, maps its interactions with religion, science, and politics across periods, and advocates institutional and interdisciplinary reforms so that formerly ‘rejected’ knowledge can be analyzed with scholarly rigor rather than polemical dismissal.
