Wringer by Jerry Spinelli
In a small town where the annual pigeon shoot is a celebrated tradition, a young boy named Palmer grapples with the pressure to conform to societal norms and the expectations of his peers. As his tenth birthday approaches, Palmer is expected to become a "wringer," a boy who wrings the necks of injured pigeons during the event. However, his growing friendship with a pigeon he secretly names Nipper challenges his beliefs and forces him to confront his fears, ultimately leading him to question the morality of the tradition and the true meaning of courage.
