Le Grand Meaulnes And Miracles by Henri Alain-Fournier
Told by a schoolteacher who idolizes his elusive friend, the novel follows the charismatic, restless Meaulnes as he stumbles upon a mysterious, fairy-tale estate and a lost celebration where he falls in love with an unattainable young woman; after a brief, enchanted encounter he loses the place and spends years consumed by a quest to recover that lost world and the idealized love it contained. The story mixes adventure, nostalgia and melancholy as friendship, fate and the passage from adolescence to adulthood collide, and the narrator watches the consequences of obsession, missed chances and the impossibility of recapturing a vanished moment.
