"Michael Cart, former YALSA president and the best-selling author of Young Adult Literature, applies his considerable expertise as one of the nation's leading experts on YA literature to identify exceptional adult books"
Weight: 15%, Added about 1 year ago.
In his own words: "I started by revisiting the adult books I had reviewed since 1994... to search back issues of the three major youth review media, Booklist, School Library Journal, and VOYA. I consulted other book lists and readers’ guides and surveyed lists of award-winning books; I browsed in bookstores, got lost in the maze that is Amazon.com...followed by winnowing and discarding, until I had assembled the list of two hundred fiction and nonfiction titles".
Total is 126 fiction and 77 non fiction, the total is 203 as he treated certain works as one, e.g. Cormac McCarthy's works are discussed/treated separately but then counted as the Border Trilogy. -

Your 50 Favorite Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of The Past Decade(2011-2021)
NPR (2021), 96 Books
A science fiction and fantasy list created by NPR that is a curated list that uses public opinion as well as a panel of experts. Here's the description from the website:
As I said above, we decided to limit ourselves to 50 books this year instead of our usual 100, which made winnowing down the list a particular challenge. As you may know, this poll isn't a straight-up popularity contest, though, if it were, the Broken Earth books would have crushed all comers — y'all have good taste! Instead, we take your votes (over 16,000 this year) and pare them down to about 250 semifinalists, and then during a truly epic conference call, our panel of expert judges goes through those titles, cuts some, adds some and hammers out a final curated list.
Note: I converted the multi book series into their individual books

A Hundred Novels to Change Your Life
The Daily Mail (2019), 95 Books
The Daily Mail's response to the BBC's list of 100 novels that 'shaped our world' is sharply critical, pointing out significant omissions and questioning the selection's focus on political correctness over literary merit. The critique highlights the absence of literary giants such as Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, and Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses," suggesting the list leans towards appealing to younger audiences at the expense of timeless classics. It also criticizes the BBC's thematic categories, like 'Identity' and 'Politics, Power and Protest,' for potentially diluting the complex essence of literature.
The article calls out specific inclusions and exclusions as misjudgments, arguing for a list that better represents enduring works that have truly impacted generations of readers. In an alternative approach, the Daily Mail invites its writers to share their personal, impactful reads, emphasizing the subjective nature of literary value and the lasting significance of books that resonate on a deeply personal level. This serves as a reminder of the power of literature to influence individually and collectively, beyond contemporary trends.

What the New York Times Missed: 71 More of the Best Books of the 21st Century
Lit Hub (2024), 69 Books
The New York Times Book Review released a list of the "100 Best Books of the 21st Century," compiled by surveying hundreds of literary professionals to select their top ten books published in the US since 2000. Respondents also participated in a series of preference-based prompts. The list, while comprehensive, inevitably excludes many notable works, such as most poetry from the past 25 years except for "Citizen." In response, Lit Hub created their own list to highlight additional significant books they felt were overlooked. Both lists, though curated with expertise, naturally miss many deserving titles, prompting readers to share their favorites.

This list is The Quietus’s curated chart of the 25 best pieces of horror fiction of the 21st century so far, produced to showcase notable novels, short stories and graphic novels that exemplify the range, influence and strangeness of contemporary horror rather than to reflect sales figures; choices were made by a small panel of experts who each submitted ranked top tens and whose submissions were aggregated to produce the final ranking, with a one-author/one-work rule in place and an explicit note that judges did not vote for their own work. The piece is written for The Quietus (tQ) by Sean Kitching with input from tQ writers and invited genre figures, and the methodology — six judges contributing ranked lists which were combined to form the top 25 — is clearly described in the article.

The 100 Novels You Must Read in Your Lifetime
Esquire (2023), 103 Books
This list focuses on what are deemed "classic" novels that one must read in a lifetime, as defined by Italo Calvino: a classic always has something to say. This collection strictly includes novels—excluding essays, biographies, short stories, and autofiction, which, despite being popular today, are not considered for this compilation. Emphasizing "modern classics," the criteria restrict entries to the best books from the last 100 years, thus excluding older foundational texts commonly studied in schools like those by Cervantes or Dickens. The list features a mix of Nobel and Strega prize winners among others, spanning a diverse range from Italian literature to global works without discrimination by genre. Acknowledging the subjective nature of such compilations, the curator invites debate and views the list not as an exhaustive decree but as a personal selection open for discussion, highlighting the playful and proposal-driven nature of this endeavor.

The Spouter-Inn; or, A Conversation with Great Books
The Spouter-Inn Podcast (2024), 74 Books
This is a podcast about "Great Books". Here is the description from the website:
Reading is far from dead. More people than ever are reading—on Kindles, iPads, and phones, in paperbacks and hardcover. The choice of what to read is endless: new online content appears every morning, and many of us have that ever-growing pile of “books I might read someday.” Some of the books in that pile might be so-called “classics,” “great books” that have been read for hundreds—even thousands—of years. But who picks up a copy of Homer’s Iliad from the bookstore table, or downloads a copy of Dante’s Divine Comedy? These books aren’t always easy to begin, and the fact that you might have studied them in college or high school just makes them seem more like work and not play. It’s not always clear how to get into these books: Can you skip parts? Can you start at the end? Why isn’t this more like a novel?
At The Spouter-Inn, we want to invite you into a series of conversations about books—how they’re shaped, what kind of world they come out of, and how they speak to us right now. Whether you’ve done the reading or are just curious, come join Suzanne (a literature professor at Princeton University) and Chris (a PhD dropout and poet) as talk about these books and what it means to read them today. Guests for many episodes often include academics and literature experts.
